The Importance of Mentoring:

Teaching Composition and Lighting to your Friends and Family

Dwon Güvenir, Cr.Photog.

Teaching your friends and family about good composition and lighting will not only help them make better images (thanks to you) and give them a good measure of your quality and craftsmanship, but more importantly give them a measure of other photographers when it comes time to hire a wedding or family photographer.  When you create a plan for teaching a topic you are forced to think through the process you go, and along the way you learn to improve your own methods and practices and become a better artist.  Most importantly, you use the mentoring process as a way to direct people through the plethora of people claiming to be ‘professional photographer’ to find those that truly take the craft seriously (like you), and discourage Uncle Barney from becoming ‘professional’ just because he got a new DSLR and needs a hobby.”

Dwon’s certifications/licenses include: Craftsman Photographer (Cr.Photog.), Full Time Professional Photographer, Oregon Outfitter/Guide, Oregon EMT, and BA degrees in Anthropology, Philosophy, and Sociology.
