AWARDS

The Award listed below are presented at the Member Appreciation Banquet held in December. 

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

Qualifications:
  • Presented Annually to a member in good standing who has entered six or more images during the current year in the Trifecta Image Competitions.
  • The photographer who has the highest cumulative score from their top 6 images of which 4 must score 80 or above.   
  • In the event of two or more members earning equal scores, they will share the award equally.


Photographer of the Year

based upon the highest total image scores earned during trifecta competitions of that calendar year. The top six scores are totaled, at least four of which must have been 80 or above.
Divisional trophies are awarded to members who have highest image scores earned during Trifecta competitions in each division (Portrait, Wedding, Fine Art/Landscape/Nature, Commercial/Illustrative/Creative Open, Digital Artist, Photojournalism/Documentary and Album). Photographer of the Year may also receive one of the Divisional awards. In the event of two or more members earn equally high image scores, each member receiving the highest total image will be awarded Trophies.

YEAR-END IMAGE COMPETITION TROPHIES

Awards are given for both category-level and division-level achievement. Additionally, some awards are non-divisional and may be drawn from the pool of eligible images regardless of category or division. These awards include but are not limited to Best First Time Entrant, Best Color Image, Best Black and White, ASP State Elite and CPP award.

Qualifications:
  • Presented annually to active members who excel in the Year-End Competition.
  • Membership dues must be paid by the Year-End Competition entry deadline to be eligible for trophies.
  • Image must score at least 80 to be eligible for awards/trophies.
    • Best Portrait (Human Subject)
    • Best Portrait (Animal Subject)
    • Best Wedding Portrait
    • Best Commercial/Architect
    • Best Photojournalism/Documentary
    • Best Fine Art
    • Best Landscape/Pictorial 
    • Best Digital Artist
    • Best Album
    • Best First Time Entrant (Based combined score of the top 4 images from a member who is in their first year of PPA or PPA Affiliate image competition).
    • Best Color
    • Best Black & White
    • CPP Award
    • ASP State Elite Award
    • Elements Awards: Impact, Best Composition, Most Creative, Technical Excellence, and Best Storytelling.
      The Elements awards will be awarded to 5 different images.

PRESIDENT'S AWARD

Qualifications:
  • Active member whose dedication & service benefits the association
  • Considered a service to the community
  • Photographer ambassador to the public
  • Selected by the President or Committee of their designation
  • Applicants can be nominated

BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Two awards presented annually to members who have achieved significant business growth.

Qualifications (both awards):

  • Applicants must be current Active Members of OPPA in good standing 
  • Applicants must have a current business (that meets all state and local business requirements) that provides photographic services, creates photo-based art, or provides services to the photography industry.
  • Selection will be made by the Awards, Points, and Degrees committee based on a written application.
  • In the event that no qualified applications are received, or the committee determines that no applicants meet the criteria, one or both awards may not be presented.

Business Excellence Award (Emerging Business):

  • Awarded to a member who launched a new photography-related business within 12 months prior to the award application.
  • Recipient may not have previously earned an OPPA Business Excellence Award
  • Selection will be based on new business growth
  • Obstacles overcome in the launching of the business may be considered.

Business Excellence Award (Established Business):

  • Awarded to a member whose photography business was established more than 12 months prior to the award application.
  • Selection will be based on business growth, either within established areas of business or growth into new areas.
  • Obstacles overcome in reaching the business growth may be considered.

Applicants can be nominated or submit the application on their own behalf using applications made available in October each year.

The form must be submitted by November 15th.

JERRY AUKER COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD 

Qualifications:

  • Active OPPA member for at least 1 full year
  • Presented to the member deemed to have contributed the most significant amount of photography related value (services or physical assets) to community service during the year.
  • In the event of two or more members contribute equal value to the community; each member will share the award.

Definition of Contributions:

Contributions can be in the form of time or services offered for free or at deeply discounted rates, or contributions can be physical assets donated such as prints, equipment, etc. There are no fixed criteria other than it must be photography-specific.

The value of the time (services) or assets donated will be determined by the member.

Miscellaneous:

If the charitable work involves a member shooting an event the time donation should not be communicated to the organization as officially “sponsored” by OPPA.

BOB AND ARLENE WELSH MENTORSHIP AWARD 

Qualifications:

  • An OPPA member in good standing.
  • Presented to the member/photographer deemed to have contributed the most significant amount of time and willingness to mentor others in their photography during the year.
  • Based on member submission of mentorship activities.
  • The Awards Committee shall make a selection of the most worthy candidate, based on information provided by the members and research/discussion by the committee.


Definition of Mentorship:

Mentorships can be in the form of time or services offered for free or at deeply discounted rates. There are no fixed criteria other than it must be photography-related, with mentorships involving 1:1 parings between a “mentor” and “mentee.”


Miscellaneous:

Time spent in classroom/workshop settings is generally not considered to be mentorship.
